  4. Romantic, he sought to establish a new
  5. realism based on contemporary life. His
  6. Burial at Ornans 1850 (Louvre, Paris),
  7. showing ordinary working people gathered
  8. round a village grave, shocked the public and
  9. the critics with its `vulgarity'. His spirit
  10. of realism was to be continued by Manet. In
  11. 1871 Courbet was active in the Paris Commune
  12. and was later imprisoned for six months for
  13. his part in it.
